La Reina Sofía en Hoteles Charleston

Esta semana, la Reina Sofía de España estuvo de visita en Colombia apoyando varios proyectos sociales en los que contribuye el Gobierno Español. En su paso por Bogotá, donde visitó una fundación en el barrio La Candelaria e inauguró una red de alcantarillado, la Reina se hospedó en el Hotel Casa Medina. Después, en su visita a Cartagena, la Reina y su comitiva escogieron como base el Hotel Charleston Santa Teresa. En las fotos de arriba se puede ver a la Reina Sofia y a la Primera Dama de Colombia, María Clemencia de Santos, siendo recibidas por Francisco Montoya, gerente del hotel. En la segunda foto, se ven la Reina y la Primera Dama admirando un especracular arreglo de flores.

This week, Queen Sofía of Spain travelled to Colombia to show her support of several social projects that are sponsored by the Spanish government. During her visit to Bogotá, where she stopped by the Escuela Taller Foundation and later inaugurated a sewer system, the Queen stayed at Hotel Casa Medina. From there, she left to Cartagena, where she was a guest at Hotel Charleston Santa Teresa. In the pics above you can see the Queen, accompanied by Colombian First Lady Maria Clemencia de Santos, being greeted by the hotel’s general manager, Francisco Montoya. Below, the Queen and the First Lady can be seen admiring one of Charleston Santa Teresa’s majestic flower arrangements.

Viajando en temporada alta

Se acerca la Semana Santa, y con esta época del año llegan también las multitudes de gente a la hora de viajar. Con esto en mente, aquí comparto unos consejos que les pueden resultar útiles en épocas de temporada alta:

• Cuando los vuelos están sobre-vendidos, generalmente la aerolínea comienza a ofrecer un tiquete o voucher para los voluntarios que se ofrezcan a quedarse a esperar otro vuelo. Si sus planes de viaje son más flexibles y no tienen problema en llegar después a su destino, esta puede ser una buena opción, SIEMPRE Y CUANDO les CONFIRMEN su lugar en el vuelo que vayan a tomar después.
• Si se quedan, asegúrense de que sus maletas no se vayan a ir a su destino sin ustedes y que la aerolínea tenga su información de contacto en caso de que pase.
• Si viajan frecuentemente y son rápidos a la hora de pasar por la fila de seguridad, fíjense si hay una fila para “viajeros expertos.” Muchos aeropuertos las tienen y tienden a ser bastante más rápidas. También tengan en mente que hay filas especiales para personas mayores, con discapacidades y familias con niños chiquitos.
• En caso de ser viajero frecuente con una aerolínea, pregunten por el upgrade. No se pierde nada preguntando y hay veces es menos costoso de lo que uno se imagina. Pregunten también por la primera fila después de ejecutiva o las de las salidas de emergencia. Para esto es clave llegar con anticipación al aeropuerto, en especial en temporada alta.

Y por supuesto, ¡siempre asegúrense de reconfirmar sus reservaciones para evitarse dolores de cabeza innecesarios y tener un viaje más tranquilo!

Spring break is near (and already here for some)! This time of year brings with it big crowds at airports, flights and hotels. With this in mind, I want to share a few tips that can reduce your high-season travelling stress:

• When flights are overbooked, airlines usually offer free tickets and vouchers for volunteers who are willing to stay and leave on a later flight. This might work for you if you have flexible travel plans, but before you jump on this opportunity, make sure your later flight (and your seat in it) is CONFIRMED. Otherwise you might be waiting for a longer time than you expected.
• If you’re staying, make sure your luggage is not getting to your destination without you. In case it does, double-check that the airline has your correct contact information.
• If you travel frequently and you’re quick when it comes to going through security, look for the “expert traveler” line, which many airports have and which tends to move much quicker than the regular lines. Keep in mind that there are also special lines for the handicapped, for seniors and for families with small children.
• If you’re a frequent flier with a specific airline, try to ask for an upgrade. It won’t hurt to ask, and sometimes they’re less expensive than you imagined. In case that doesn’t work, ask to be seated in the first row after business or in one of the emergency rows. Getting to the airport early is key to accomplish this.

And always make sure you double-check your travel arrangements! This is the easiest way to avoid an unnecessary headache and better enjoy your trip…

Más que un baño…

Las recientes remodelaciones de las habitaciones de los Hoteles Charleston, que mencioné un tiempo atrás, incluyeron, como era de esperarse, los baños. Personalmente, creo que uno puede juzgar un hotel por sus baños y los de los Hoteles Charleston no decepcionan, ya que son un ejemplo más del diseño bien pensado. Para la mayoría de las superficies se escogió el vidrio, principalmente por que es un material higiénico en el cual se nota cada detalle. Aquí no se corre el riesgo de estar en contacto con superficies que APARENTAN estar limpias pero en realidad no lo están. Pensando en la seguridad y comodidad de sus huéspedes, los pisos se pusieron de mármol antideslizante y las duchas mantienen una presión constante gracias a unas bombas especiales. Y como a fin de cuentas son los Hoteles Charleston, la atención al detalle no podía quedar a un lado- todos los baños cuentan con excelente iluminación, amplio espacio y amenities orgánicos y antialérgicos.

Como dato extra para los interesados, las papeleras de los baños son las famosas In Atessa, diseñadas en 1971 por Enzo Mari para Danese Milano. Estas papeleras, que parecen caerse hacia un lado, son más estables y fáciles de usar.

Recently, I mentioned that all rooms in Charleston Hotels were remodeled. Those renovations, as expected, included the bathrooms. Personally, I believe you can judge a hotel by the quality and cleanliness of its bathrooms, and Charleston Hotels don’t disappoint. Glass was chosen as the main material for almost all surfaces for two main reasons. First, it is more hygienic. And second, you can easily detect any spot or mark, which allows you to be 100% sure that the surfaces don’t just SEEM clean but actually are. With safety and comfort in mind, the floors are made of non-slippery marble and the showers maintain constant pressure thanks to special pressure pumps. And since we’re talking about Charleston Hotels, attention to detail was to be expected- all bathrooms have excellent lighting, ample space and organic amenities.

As an extra fact for those who are interested in product design, the wastebaskets in the bathrooms are the famous In Atessa, designed in 1971 by Enzo Mari for Danese Milano. These angled containers are user-friendlier and less likely to tip over.

Comida orgánica- ¿vale la pena?

El tema de la comida orgánica tiende a ser controversial ya que unos aseguran que es la clave de la salud mientras otros insisten que es botar la plata. Mi opinión personal es que vale la pena invertirle a este tipo de comida por dos razones. La primera- es buena para el medio ambiente ya que la conserva la tierra y evita que absorba cualquier cantidad de pesticidas y abonos artificiales. La segunda- nuestros cuerpos están hechos para digerir la comida que produce la tierra, entre más cerca de su estado natural y como se da sin la intervención de los humanos, mejor. Unas décadas atrás, este problema no existía en Colombia, ni en muchos lugares del mundo, por que la mayoría de la comida era natural. Pero el incremento de la población mundial y la falta de comida fomentaron una industria en que la prioridad era la cantidad y no la calidad. Aunque el problema de comidas con hormonas, aditivos y pesticidas es menos grave en Colombia que en países como Estados Unidos, es importante saber algunos datos claves para tomar una decisión informada:

-       La verdadera prioridad en cuando a los productos orgánicos son los derivados de los animales, especialmente las carnes..

-       En general, las frutas y verduras con cáscaras/pieles  delgadas y que se comen tienden a absorben más químicos que las de cáscaras gruesas, por lo tanto es recomendable comprarlas orgánicas. (Ej. Tomates, durazno, manzana, fresas, peras).

-       Los productos orgánicos en Colombia deben llevar el Sello Único Nacional del Ministerio de Agricultura.

The issue of whether organic food is worth the extra $$$ can be quite controversial, with some insisting it’s the key to great health while others assure its just an over-priced trend. My personal opinion is that it’s worth the investment for mainly two reasons. First, it is good for the environment since it reduces groundwater pollution by avoiding pesticides. Second, our bodies were made to digest the food the Earth produces naturally- the closer it is to its natural state (without human intervention) the better. A few decades ago, this issue didn’t exist in Colombia, or in many other places of the world, for that matter. Food used to be grown naturally but with the increase in world population and the famines that ensued, the priority became quantity and not quality. Even though hormones and pesticides are more widely used in countries like the United States than in Colombia, it’s helpful to know some key facts to be able to make an informed decision:

-        The most important type of products to buy organic are animal-derived products, in particular beef, chicken and pork.

-       Fruits and vegetables with eatable or thin skins tend to contain more additives, so it’s preferable to buy those organic (Ex: Tomatoes, peaches, apples, strawberries, pears).

-       Organic products in Colombia must have a seal provided by the Agriculture Department that says “Sello Único Nacional.”

Consejos para un viaje más cómodo

Viajar es uno de los más grandes lujos de la vida…pero parte de viajar generalmente incluye tener que acomodarse a situaciones que no son necesariamente las más cómodas…

Aquí comparto algunas de mis sugerencias para un viaje más cómodo, y a fin de cuentas, feliz:

- Una bufanda grande, preferiblemente de cachemir, que también sirva de cobija en el avión (y hablando del avión, unas medias gruesas para el frío)

- Cremas de manos y cara en tamaño pequeño, por que no hay nada peor después de aterrizar de un viaje largo que sentir que uno no puede ni sonreír sin que se le parta la cara

- Sweater negro- nunca sobra y va con todo

- Bolsas plásticas transparentes- la mejor forma de llevar las cosas del baño, además son útiles para guardar ropa interior, medias, vestidos de baño o cualquier cosa que se ensucie

- Buenos audífonos (para el ruido en el avión), buen libro (si son como  yo y siguen prefiriendo un libro con páginas físicas) y un Ipad (la salvación en los momentos de espera)

- Gafas de sol- indispensables para viajes a la playa, montaña, ciudad…

- Una gabardina- perfecta para los sitios donde ventea mucho e ideal con capas extra por debajo para el frío

- Maleta pequeña de tela que vaya doblada dentro de la maleta para las posibles compras

Travel is one of life´s biggest luxuries—but to be honest, it usually includes having to adapt to less-than-comfortable situations…

Here, I share some of my suggestions for a more confortable, and ultimately happy, trip:

- A big scarf, preferably cashmere, that can double as a blanket for the plane (and speaking of the plane, a pair of thick wool socks for the cold)

- Travel-size hand and face creams because there´s nothing worse than landing after a long flight and realizing you´re afraid to smile because of fear your skin might crack.

- Black cardigan- goes with everything and doesn´t take much space in your lugagge

- Zip-lock bags- the best way to carry your toiletries and ideal for underwear, socks and bathing suits. They are also handy for packing something that gets dirty.

- Great headphones (for the plane), a good book (if you´re like me and prefer to turn actual pages) and an Ipad (helps avoid moments of complete boredom)

- Sunglasses- useful in the city, country or beach

- Trenchcoat- A chicer version of the wind-breaker or, with extra layers underneath, perfect for braving the cold

- Small duffel bag folded inside your luggage- for all the great finds you´ll want to bring back home

La semana pasada les hablé de los impresionantes eventos que se llevan a cabo en los Hoteles Charleston. Para entrar más en el tema, esta semana les tengo una mini-entrevista con María Gómez, una de las mentes detrás del equipo de Eventos de los hoteles. ¿Quien mejor que ella para compartir algunos de sus secretos y experiencias?

¿Qué es más importante en este trabajo: creatividad o eficiencia?Creatividad siempre y cuando uno sepa producir la idea eficientemente.Así que las dos cosas son realmente claves.

¿Buena comida o buen trago? Comida

_Pasabocas con mucha salsa_ es la comida que nunca se debería servir en un evento

¿Cómo es la pareja ideal que llega a ustedes para que les planeen el matrimonio?La pareja ideal es una que se deje guiar pero al mismo tiempo tiene un estilo definido.

Lo más importante en la decoración para un evento es:

1. Las flores
2. Las mesas/sillas
3. La iluminación
4. Otro: Todos los elementos juntos. La producción de un buen evento depende de todos… Ejemplo- unas flores bien iluminadas se ven más impactantes así sean poquitas, los manteles resaltan las flores y hacen que la mesa se vea bien puesta, y las sillas dan el toque final.

 El momento más emocionante de un matrimonio es: _el momento de la entrada de la novia al sitio de la recepción.

El mejor trago para prender una fiesta es:  whiskey y vodka

El mejor remedio para el guayabo es: ¡no mezclar tragos! 

¿Cuál es la peor crisis a la que te has enfrentado en un evento?

Un novio borracho que se botó a la piscina y se rompió la nariz en 2 pedazos la noche antes del matrimonio.

¿Que debería hacer una novia el dia de su matrimonio para preparase para su noche?

Una novia debe descansar y desconectarse de los detalles del evento y debe tener a alguien de confianza que se encargue.

Las velas  es/son el elemento de decoración que siempre queda bien y nunca falla.

Last week, I wrote about the jaw-dropping events that take place in, and are planned by, Hoteles Charleston. In order to dig deeper into the subject, this week I wanted to share this short interview with María Gómez, one of the brains behind the hotels’ Events Department. Here, she shares some of her tips and a few experiences she’s had while at work:

The element that’s indispensable for a good party is: organization and details.

Mi favorite flowers for an event are: orchids, they go with any other flower.

What’s more important in this line of work: creativity or efficiency?Creativity, as long as you know how to carry out an idea efficiently…. so both are really crucial.

What’s more important: good food or good quality drinks? Food

Finger food with a lot of sauce is the food that should never be served at an event.

Please describe the “ideal” couple that approaches you for their wedding planning. The ideal couple is one that is open to ideas but at the same time has a defined style.

The most important element in the decoration of an event is:

1. The flowers
2. The tables and chairs
3. The lighting
4. Other: All of the above together. The production of a great event depends on all of them…For example, a flower arrangement that has good lighting will look much better, even if it just has a few flowers… Also, beautiful table linens highlight a flower arrangement and nice chairs are the finishing touch.

The most exciting moment in a wedding is: the moment the bride enters the reception room.

The best alcoholic drink to light up a party is: scotch and vodka

The best tip to avoid a hangover is: not mixing different types of drinks.

¿What is the worst crisis you’ve faced in an event you were organizing? A drunken groom jumped into a pool headfirst and broke his nose the night before the wedding.

What should a bride do the day of the wedding in order to prepare for her big night? A bride should rest and disconnect from every detail of the event. She should have someone she trusts taking care of things.

Candles are/is the decorative element that always looks good and never fails.
